Ten Year-Old Durham Girl & 100 Volunteers
Brave a Shave to Support Childhood Cancer Research
Durham, NC: March 28, 2013 – Worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every 3 minutes. In the U.S., more children are lost to cancer than all other childhood diseases combined. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation exists to change these realties.
West 94th St Pub in Woodcroft Shopping Center will host one of its signature head-shaving events on Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 12noon-5pm, where 10 teams of shavees and more than 100 local volunteers will shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers!
Ten year-old Lindsey Jouannet of Durham has decided to be BOLD and go BALD. Lindsey is the only female member of the Bethesda Baldies Team, a group of 15 elementary and middle school students from Bethesda Christian Academy, to brave a shave to conquer kids’ cancer. Lindsey has participated in Locks of Love several times and raised money for St Baldrick’s in the past; however, this is the first year she has decided to go bald. When asked why, she states “that many of my friends, teachers and family members have been affected by this disease and I want to make a difference.” Lindsey hopes to raise more money than ever before - $2,500! In addition, the Class of 2013 Duke Physician Assistants (Blue Devil Baldies Team) will be participating with a team of 20 shavees (over half are women) and 45 event volunteers. The Blue Devil Baldies Team seeks to raise $30,000 for this event.
Opening Ceremonies kick off at noon and will be hosted by Mike Wheless of 94.7QDR, Anthony Wilson of WTVD and Ken Nichols of Sports Durst Millennium Automotive Group. Studio K Salon, Bella Trio Day Spa and Meredith Rigsbee will be onsite to shave the heads of our volunteers. The event will also include music provided by Hillary Rich of Aries Entertainment and a Silent Auction and Raffle for prizes generously donated by local merchants, including trips to Las Vegas and Belize. Children will enjoy appearances by Mr. Rainbow the Clown, inflatables, face painting, and a piñata area sponsored by Bandido’s Mexican Café. West 94th St. Pub will also offer a special food menu and donate a portion of its proceeds to St. Baldrick’s. For additional details, contact Kerry Bonner-Bryant at 919-599-9054 or kbpaw_21@msn.com. About the St. Baldrick’s Foundation
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $101 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, which may be a child’s best hope for a cure.
