With impressive SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, the five-passenger CX-5 has garnered many accolades, including Autobytel’s “Crossover of the Year” award; MotorWeek’s “Best Small Utility”; and Ward’s “10 Best Interiors.” It was even selected as “SUV of the Year for the Americas” by the International Federation of Automotive Journalists (also known as “FIPA”). The biggest news for the 2014 Mazda CX-5 (MSRP $21,195) is the introduction of the 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G (“G” for “gasoline”) four-cylinder engine. This new engine produces 184 hp and 185 lb/ft of torque, making the CX-5 one of the most powerful non-turbo cars in the segment. Even with the extra power, the 2.5-liter still achieves an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The new engine is standard in uplevel Touring and Grand Touring trims and comes paired exclusively with a SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.
The CX-5 Sport comes equipped with the groundbreaking SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and maintains that industry-best 35 mpg highway fuel economy (manual transmission). The CX-5 Sport is available with your choice of a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission or the SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic. Standard with front-wheel drive, the CX-5 also offers the added performance and safety of the Mazda Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive system.
SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY was incorporated into the chassis and body design of the CX-5, as well. A SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis ensure that the CX-5 structure is extremely strong while keeping mass to a minimum. The 61-percent high-strength-steel SKYACTIV-Body is lighter and stronger, providing superior handling and rigidity. The lightweight SKYACTIV-Chassis uses a front strut suspension design with a multi-link rear setup. The result of this obsessive attention to detail is a 0.33 coefficient of drag, one of the best on the market.
The sophisticated suspension setup, low weight and sporty powertrain all combine to give the Mazda CX-5 dynamic, car-like handling characteristics. With quick responses and nimble handling, it drives like no other small utility on sale today. Steering and braking controls react precisely and predictably, providing a very linear and progressive feel.
The interior of the CX-5 is built with this same level of detail. The cabin is driver oriented, with easy-to-read screens, well-placed controls and an intuitive layout. Supportive seats and an abundance of soft-touch materials create a luxurious feel to the interior. Other details include piano black and satin leather trim pieces.
Thanks to its segment-leading, 106.3-inch wheelbase, the CX-5 has one of the largest interior volumes available. Rear-seat passengers are treated to nearly 40-inches of legroom and there is still room for 34 cubic feet of cargo. When more cargo room is needed, the seats will fold with the press of one button to reveal a cavernous 64.8 cubic feet of storage.
To make all your journeys as easy and entertaining as possible the CX-5 has been fitted with a full collection of entertainment and convenience features. A 5.8-inch touch-screen dominates the center console and handles phone and audio functions. Steering-wheel audio controls, a USB port and auxiliary audio input are standard. Navigation and Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming are also available to make it easier than ever to connect your devices. For the absolute best in sound, the CX-5 is available with a nine-speaker, 225-watt Bose® Centerpoint® Surround Sound System with AudioPilot®. While SKYACTIV technologies increase efficiency and help save weight, they also play an important part in occupant protection. The high-strength materials used to build the CX-5 create a sturdy cage to protect passengers and act as a strong base for a full suite of safety equipment. An Antilock Brake System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution with Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Roll Stability Control and six airbags are all standard equipment on the CX-5.
New for 2014 is an available Smart City Brake Support System that uses laser sensors to detect vehicles ahead and can help avoid front-end collisions at low speeds. These features and others helped the CX-5 secure a “Top Safety Pick” designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) last year.
