"Two weeks prior to coming to this dealership, I had a bad experience with another car dealership. I was skeptical at first but Mr. Mclam and the other employees were great to work with. They made you feel comfortable. Mr. Mclam was very honest and helped you the best you could. He tried to get you the best deal he could get you with out all the run around that you find at other dealerships." -S. Holloway

"Buying our new car was a great experience thanks to the helpful and courteous service we received at Sport Durst. Carole Henderson and the wonderful staff went above and beyond to make the the process as enjoyable as possible. Carole and her team are friendly and knowledgeable, and I would definitely recommend this dealership to friends and family. The service didn't end when we drove off either, which I was very impressed with." -Angela C.

"My husband and I were starting to look for a new car to replace our hatchback. We knew of a few makes/models that we wanted to look at so we stopped by Sport Durst Mazada on a Friday evening on the way to baseball game. Will Mills came out to meet us. My husband explained that we were looking for a new car for me. Will asked us a few clarifying questions and then took us to see both a Mazada3 and a Hyundai Elantra GT. For both of the cars, he walked me, not my husband, through the sticker details item by item, speaking in layman terms. It was exactly what I needed. He clearly covered the safety features on both cars. He explained the differences between the two cars. We went for a test drive in the Elantra and then told Will that we weren't in a huge rush to buy a car and left. We went to a few other dealerships and realized then, what we had thought when we left Will, that he was a great salesperson. None of the other salesmen were as friendly or as clear and honest as Will was. I felt that when talking to Will, that it was like having my dad explain things to me. He seemed to know my lack of understanding of cars and talked to my level - he didn't get too technical but didn't get too basic.
The following week we returned to test drive a Mazada3. Will was there and immediately came to greet us. He was once again friendly. We decided to purchase the car and he seemed enthusiastic about it, almost like he was purchasing a car for himself. We met with David Dowdy in finance and he talked us through the financing. We then got passed over to Jordan Gibbs who sat with us to show us all of the features on the car. First, she went quickly through the manual and then took us to the car to show us what all of the buttons did. She was very friendly and knowledgeable and went through the car in a logical manner, button by button. At the end, Will came back out to say goodbye and take a photo of us by the new car and old car!
My husband and I had just purchased another car last year from a different dealership. We both thought that from start to finish this was by far the best buying experience we have ever had and last year's experience was pretty good. It was a quick process, the staff were extremely nice. I never felt pressured. I didn't get that creepy feeling that you sometimes get when you go on a car lot...like the sharks are circling you. It was genuinely a great experience. I have passed on Will's name to others and will continue to do it. I was very impressed. I hope to not have to buy a new car for many years now but when I am ready, I will be heading by to Sport Durst Mazada!" -Cindy L.

Hyundai NA CEO awarded Automotive Executive of the Year

Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik is this year's Automotive Executive of the Year. DNV Business Assurance presents the award each year, and this year, Robert Djurovic, executive director of the award program, said Krafcik won the nod because he "reshaped the way Hyundai approaches the market with consumer focus, compelling design and enduring value." While speaking at the award ceremony, Krafcik said that he was humbled by the recognition and that he accepted the accolade on behalf of Hyundai team members, dealers and suppliers.

Krafcik joined Hyundai in 2004 as the vice president of product development and took on duties as chief executive in 2008. Since then, the automaker has seen a flurry of new products and a substantial jump in market share. His efforts have also helmed Hyundai to two North American Car of the Year awards in 2009 and 2012 for the Genesis and Elantra, respectively. Krafcik also helped Hyundai navigate through the company's fuel economy debacle that began late last year, in which the automaker admitted it overstated the efficiency ratings of many of its automobiles.

Maintenance Tip: Water-spot removal

Water-spot removal: After washing and rinsing your car, remove your spray nozzle from the hose and let the water flow from the hose to cover the entire car. You'll notice the water will sheet off the paint and as a result, there will be less water on the paint to have to dry off. This allows you to dry your car more quickly, use fewer towels, and reduce the chance of having water spots.

Our week just keeps getting better! Check out these new reviews we just received! http://bit.ly/13l0Nff

"My experience at this dealership was the epitome of good customer service. The wheel was set in motion from the moment I got out of my old car. Before I reached the door one employee greeted me and asked how he could help. I told him that I was looking for a car. He pleasantly invited me in. At that moment little did I know that a couple of hours later I would be driving home in a brand new vehicle. Then, we met Jack and my host asked him if he was available. Walking behind Jack to his office, I was well on my guard knowing how aggressive sales people can be. I can now admit that I was wrong. My impression of Jack is that of an individual who is attentive and sensitive to the needs of his clients. He worked with me until he found an option that had quality, was affordable and suitable to my needs. During the negotiations, I truly believed that he wanted to make me happy more than anything else. Don't get me wrong, I did not always agree with his offers but he was very tactful in re-engaging me every time we faced an impasse. The negotiations even stalled at one point as we failed to agree on the monthly payments. He excused himself for a moment and when he returned, I had my purse on my laps ready to say goodbye. Then he offered me an alternative that turned out to be a game changer. This time it was another ChrysIer 200 of a different color. I was reluctant at first but I did accept to test drive it. The rest is history. The car is exactly what I wanted. I hated black. I never drove a black car in my entire life but now I am loving it. Tony is another success story. The minute I walked in to his office I felt like a million dollars. His broad smile and expertise confirmed that I was at the right place. He went over all the information in the package with me and showered me with awesome gifts. Something I never experienced anywhere else. You guys are the best. If I ever find anyone looking for a car I will not hesitate to recommend Jack and this dealership. I bought a Chrysler at another location four years ago but I cannot say the same about their service.

Thank you jack, Tony and the entire Team. You made me very happy and I appreciate all that you have done for me. Most importantly, I "LOVE MY CAR"." -Marie A.

Custom classic car shop builds $280,000 old Dodge pickup

Talk about pricing what the market will bear. How about $280,000 for an old Dodge pickup? Or $190,000 for a 1950s station wagon-cum-jalopy covered in rust?

These are the kind of prices Jonathan Ward, owner and head designer of Los Angeles-based custom automobile maker Icon charges — and he still has a year-long backlog of orders.

“My customer is a guy who loves the aesthetic of old vehicles but doesn’t want to put up with a lousy ride, the creaks and rattles and breakdowns,” Ward says.

Icon sources older models such as Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40s, Ford Broncos and Jeep CJs and marries their exteriors to all-modern chassis and powertrains. They look old but drive like new. Ward also adds one-off (and often wacky) details like hidden navigation systems and sun visors taken from private jets.

At first glance the $280,000 pickup truck looks like a well-maintained 1965 Dodge D200. Then you notice that the behemoth has four doors and a reworked grill. The lights are LEDs and the tires ludicrously over-sized.

The double set of side windows have an Art Deco shape and the glass itself has an odd, reflective quality (it’s special glass used in skyscrapers). Open a door and a running board slides out from under the vehicle automatically, making it easier to enter.

Mega Cab

Ward and his crew spent a year on the Dodge, removing body panels from the original truck and reworking them to fit the chassis of a heavy-duty 2007 Dodge Mega Cab 3500. The suspension was upgraded and a 5.9-liter Cummins turbo-diesel six-cylinder installed. The engine was specially tuned to produce 975 pound-feet of torque and 575 horsepower.

That incredible power sounds like hyperbole, but as I discover on a test drive along California’s Highway 1, it is not. Ward is riding shotgun as I negotiate the precarious curves and find that I rarely need to shift — the engine pulls like a locomotive even in fifth gear.

The long stick from the six-speed manual transmission pokes up from the footwell and takes a strong hand. As does the oversized, leather-bound steering wheel, which only adds to the impression that you’re driving a tractor-sized vehicle.

Rolls’ Rugs

The roof is padded with bison hide and the thick carpets underfoot pilfered from a Rolls-Royce. While the radio looks like an old AM unit, it actually operates a bumping stereo system. A digital information screen slides out of a compartment in the dash.

The truck was a special order for a client from Wyoming, but Ward says, “I really don’t want to give this one up.” I sympathize with him. I feel like I’m driving the king of trucks.

Still, good luck reconciling the mind-boggling price, which is partly a result of Ward’s near-maniacal obsession with details. Some of the underpinnings (which you’ll never see) are aeronautical grade, and though the switches and knobs are the same shape as the originals, Ward mills them out of metal.
His business has grown every year, he says, but the level of specificity slows production. Though Icon moved into a larger shop and delivered 30 vehicles in 2012, Ward says it is difficult to keep up with orders. His best-seller is the reworked Land Cruiser, which starts at around $130,000.

Stepping out of the Dodge with relief (you don’t want to mess up a vehicle before the buyer takes delivery), I move over to one of Ward’s personal rides, a literal rust bucket.

Addams Family

Nominally, the car is a 1952 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon with the front end of a DeSoto grafted on. With a teeth-like grill, a rusted patina and rubbed-off paint, it looks like it could have belonged to the Addams Family’s Uncle Fester.

But no. As one of Ward’s “Derelict” series, it goes for $190,000. “It’s super fast. You can hammer the curves with it,” Ward explains handing me the keys. I have my doubts, but turn it toward the winding canyon roads.

The steering wheel and wood flooring are all original, but the guts of the thing certainly aren’t. The sound of the modern 6.1-liter V-8 Hemi reverberates through the cabin and the five- speed automatic transmission clicks through gears promptly.

The suspension ably handles dips and curves. Yet my subconscious is telling me the car is going to fall apart at any moment. Since this is Ward’s daily driver, I turn the wheel over to him.

He promptly sends us hurtling down cliff-side roads, tires shrieking and brakes smoking. I look into the abyss on the passenger side and momentarily lose my breath: For $190,000 you don’t get airbags or modern safety restraints — only a simple lap belt.

Hyundai reports May sales record with fastest daily-selling rate ever

Hyundai Motor America announced Monday sales of 68,358 units, up two percent versus the same period in 2012 and up about eight percent over a very strong April. It was the company's second-best sales month of all-time, second only to March 2012, and the fastest daily-selling rate ever.

"May was a high-velocity sales month for us, with the post-Memorial Day frenzy leaving us well positioned for the summer selling season. An across-the-board strengthening of key economic indicators and our strong Assurance Connected Care message drove prospective customers to our showrooms in droves to check out the strongest lineup of cars and CUVs in our history," said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of national sales. "Our core products – the Montgomery-built Elantra and Sonata and the West Point, Ga. built Santa Fe – all performed exceptionally well. We're selling each of these three U.S-built products as fast as we can build them."

Elantra sales at 25,090 units were up 33 percent over last May and up 30 percent year-to-date, representing the shift in U.S. production mix to meet surging Elantra demand. Sonata sales remain strong, with demand constrained only by production mix in Alabama. Both Elantra and Sonata are selling at sales velocities significantly higher than their competitors, with incentive levels and fleet mixes significantly lower than competitors. The all-new Santa Fe continues its capacity-constrained torrid selling rate, exceeding the 7,000 unit mark, up 21 percent on a year-to-date basis and in short supply across the country. Demand for the Equus, the industry's highest customer satisfaction model (according to J.D. Power's 2013 Customer Satisfaction Index) and Genesis models remains exceptionally strong, with inventory levels low as changeover to 2014 models is underway. This had a significant impact on Genesis and Equus sales in May.

"Our plants continue to work at maximum capacity to meet record demand levels across our lineup," said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. "Elantra and Sonata remain extremely hot sellers for us, with that duo exceeding 45,000 combined sales for the first time ever. Our new complimentary Assurance Connected Care telematics program is clearly resonating with customers, with record website traffic and signup activity for all of our telematics services. And our premium customers have a lot to look forward to as the updated 2014 Equus will be arriving in dealerships later this month, joining the high-performance Genesis for a strong one-two punch at the top of our lineup."

In mid-May, Hyundai announced Assurance Connected Care, an innovative suite of consumer-focused programs featuring unsurpassed connected-car solutions and enabling remote car control features. Three years of Assurance Connected Care are now standard on all Blue Link-equipped vehicles.

Fleet mix registered about 18 percent for the month, among the lowest in the industry. Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 6,696 a May record, up 17 percent over May 2012. Hyundai continues to have one of the lowest fleet mixes and lowest incentive spending levels in the industry. These two factors, along with strong CPO sales, have driven Hyundai residual values to be among the very best in the industry according to ALG.

Summer Car-Maintenance Tips

The record-setting heat seen across the country can put extra stress on your car -- especially if it has a lot of miles on it. You'll notice an increased number of cars on the side of the road, particularly on these really hot days.

There are some simple preventative maintenance steps you can take to avoid walking instead of driving this summer.

1. Tires: Think about walking across the blacktop parking lot barefoot on a hot summer day -- that is what your tires experience during summer months. In addition, the heat is multiplied by the friction caused by the weight of your car. Heat pushes the materials your tires are made of to their limit, causing blowouts and flat tires. Make sure a reputable mechanic looks at your tires at least every 3,000 miles. Also, in between, make sure you keep your tires inflated to the manufacturer's specification, which is found in the vehicle's owner's manual. This will not only prolong tire life but help reduce fuel consumption.

2. Belts: Another wearable item that is put under extra stress in the summer months is the serpentine belt, sometimes called the fan belt. The added underhood heat and the use of air conditioning weakens it, and if broken it immobilizes your car. For less than half of the price of a tow-truck ride home, you can buy a new serpentine belt and have it installed.

3. Cooling system: Oil changes are followed pretty regularly by most owners. However, an often overlooked fluid change is your cooling system fluid, or coolant. While this fluid lasts thousands of miles, and many manufactures call their coolant “100,000 mile” fluid, it should not be neglected. Have your dealer or mechanic test your fluid to ensure that it is up to snuff. Also, if your car does not have the high-mileage fluid in it, having it flushed and changed every two years is a good rule of thumb.

4. Air conditioning: While this system won't always leave you stranded when it fails (though it can), living without A/C on a hot day isn't fun. There is a lubricant in the system that can break down over time, and it should be conditioned every three years or as needed.

Next-gen Chrysler 200 to be "complete home run"

The Chrysler 200 is one of the most derided vehicles in the entire automotive industry, but those that have seen the next-generation of the mid-size sedan describe it as a “complete home run.”

The current 200 has struggled to make much of a splash in the mid-size segment, thanks in large to its Sebring roots. Although Chrysler did an admirable job in updating the 200's looks and interior quality when the sedan moved away from the Sebring nameplate in 2010, it still doesn't measure up to the segment's heavy-weights.

However, that will reportedly change when an all-new version of the 200 debuts in early 2014. Chrysler has so far only shown the new 200 to dealers – who obviously have some skin in the game – but early feedback has been extremely positive for the sedan.

“The new 200 is a complete home run,” Chrysler dealer David Kelleher told The Detroit News. “It’s got that strength of a very, very expensive European sedan like a Mercedes, but it’s definitively American.”

Although Kelleher has a vested interest in touting Chrysler products, he openly admits that the automaker has never really been competitive in the mid-size segment.

“I’ve been selling Chryslers since 1992 and, heck, I don’t know if we’ve ever been competitive in that market,” he added.

Chrysler says the 200 will be a clean slate redesign, but brand chief Saad Chehab admits cars like the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima and Ford Fusion have influenced the design direction of the new 200.

“We react to things we see no matter where they are and the Fusion is one of the stops we made,” Chehab said. “Our challenge was that if any of us walk into a room and look at the car, is my jaw going to drop?”

Chrysler hasn't announced when or where the all-new 200 will debut, but we suspect the mid-size sedan will make its first public appearance a the Detroit auto show in January 2014.

Preserve your car during long-term storage

If you are not going to use your car for more than a month, store it properly to prevent unnecessary damage and repairs upon your return.
  • Fill the gas tank to help prevent condensation from accumulating in the gas tank. Add a fuel stabilizer and drive the car around a bit to distribute the additive to engine parts.
  • Wash and wax the car thoroughly to protect the finish.
  • Place a vapor barrier on your garage floor. A 4-mil polyethylene drop cloth will do.
  • Disengage the parking brake to help avoid brake corrosion.
  • Put the car on jack stands to take the weight of the vehicle off the wheels and tires.
  • Disconnect and remove the battery to keep it from draining. Place the battery on a trickletype charger. Or periodically drain the battery, using a small light bulb, and then recharge it with a low-volt charger.
  • Plug the tailpipe with a rag to prevent moist air from infiltrating into it.
